My friend, B, sent me a tweet asking for tips on how to stay fresh and pretty during the summer. I don't consider myself an expert (just an afficionado) but I thought I'd share what works for me.
First off, I hate summer because the heat makes me feel so uncomfortable. Wearing a lot of makeup is a nightmare as it makes my skin oilier than it already is and it just feels too heavy. Maybe I'm just too fussy. Point is, I try to use the least amount of products and go for things that feel light.
At the heart of my summer routine are three products:
I prefer a tinted moisturizer because it means I don't have to layer on several products. Aveeno's Positively Radiant Tinted Mositurizer hydrates, provides light coverage, has sun protection, and what I love is that it has brightening properties which help in achieving that perfect summer glow.
My undereye circles will never escape me so I still need to use a concealer. theBalm's Time Balm concealer does not have the tacky texture that most concealers in a pot have. It feels light and effectively improves the appearance of my dark circles.
I skip wearing mascara, eyeliner and eyeshadow during the day. At most, I will curl my lashes and ensure that my eyebrows are well-groomed. I've been going to Browhaus regularly and in between visits, I shave or pluck any stray hair. To keep my brows looking neat and well-defined, I use Shu Uemura's Eyebrow Manicure. It's waterproof which makes it perfect for this season.
During the day, I like wearing bright blush to add color to my face. Pictured above is Glow On Blush in Medium Pink from Shu Uemura. I am also still deeply in love with My Paradise Cheek Powder which was part of last year's MAC Surf Baby collection.
I pair my bright cheeks with a sheer and shiny lip gloss. My picks: NARS Lip Gloss in Turkish Delight, Guerlain Kiss Kiss Gloss in Pêche Charnelle and Lancome Juicy Tubes (I don't know what this color is called but it's a really cute red apple tint).
I'll switch my look at night and go for a soft pink blush that has a bit of shimmer in it. Then, I tie up the look with a bold lip color.
Right now, I am obsessed with Guerlain Parure de Nuit Pressed Powder and Blush. It's a highlighter and blush palette from the Holiday 2011 collection. I think it's a beautiful shade for a summer evening because it gives a nice subtle glow.
Fuchsia is a fun alternative to the classic red lip. Estee Lauder Pure Color Lipstick in Fuchsia Fever and Scan-delicious Kissable Lipcolour from the recent Shop MAC, Cook MAC collection fall into this category.
The only time I'll wear any eye color is if I'm going out somewhere nice during the evening - that's usually dinner out with Preppyboy or my friends.
Simplicity is still what I'm after so I apply a light wash of a single color. Le Metier De Beaute City Girl Eye Kaleidoscope has sheer and shimmery shades that work for this look. Another product is the Baked Collection Eye Shadow from Palladio. The palette above is called Pink Bliss.
I then apply a thin line of liquid eyeliner on my upper lashline. Cezanne Ultra Fine Eyeliner N Black is my favorite because it stays on the entire day - it won't smudge or fade! The brush applicator is so easy to use. A similar product is the eyeliner from K Palette.
Still, no mascara. I think the eyeliner is more than enough.
I also make sure to apply sunblock on my neck, ears and any part exposed. Natural Sun Body & Family Mild Sun Milk from The Face Shop is great because it's not heavy or greasy. It has a nice milky scent too.
In my bag, I carry whatever lip product I use for the day, lipbalm, blotting sheets from Kleenex and a small bottle of Shu Uemura Depsea Water. I don't bring any powder - it tends to look cakey when I reapply.
What works for me is blotting my t-zone to get rid of the excess oil without removing much of my makeup. After that, I spritz on a hydrating mist to make me feel refreshed.
It's not a complicated routine... I can't deal with that because the summer makes me lazy haha! Anyway, I hope this was helpful. If you have any more tips to share, please do so in the comment section below :)
